Atonement

       POSITION STATEMENT

The Savior, Jesus Christ, suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the cross to atone for the sins and afflictions of all mankind. He was the only one who could accomplish the Atonement because He was without sin. Each Sabbath day we are able to renew our covenants with the Lord. Because of the Atonement we are able to repent and be forgiven of our sins. Jesus Christ has the power to cleanse and purify us, through His grace and mercy. Because of the Atonement, we have the possibility of living in the presence of Heavenly Father. I hope to always be repentant and able to walk away from sin and to have faith in the Savior and accept His precious gift of the Atonement.

            QUOTES

1.
“Remember that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is built not for men and women who are perfect or unaffected by mortal temptations, but rather it is built for people exactly like you and me. And it is built upon the rock of our Redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ, through whose Atonement we can be cleansed and become “fellow citizens … of the household of God.”
President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Four Titles, General Conference, April 2013

2.
My dear friends, when we decide to come to Him, when we take upon ourselves His name and boldly walk in the path of discipleship, then through the Atonement we are promised not only happiness and “peace in this world” but also “eternal life in the world to come. “When we make mistakes, when we sin and fall, let us think of what it means to truly repent. It means turning our heart and will to God and giving up sin. True heartfelt repentance brings with it the heavenly assurance that “we can do it now.”
President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, You Can Do It Now, General Conference, April 2013

3.
“Jesus administers the balance between justice and mercy conditioned upon our obedience to His gospel. He is the light for all mankind. He is the fountain of all truth. He fulfills all of His promises. All who obey His commandments will earn the most glorious blessings imaginable.”
Elder Richard G. Scott, “He Lives All Glory” To His Name, General Conference, April 2010

4.
We are not and never need be alone. We can press forward in our daily lives with heavenly help. Through the Savior’s Atonement we can receive capacity and “strength beyond [our] own” (Hymns, no. 220). As the Lord declared, “Therefore, continue your journey and let your hearts rejoice; for behold, and lo, I am with you even unto the end" D&C100:12.”
Elder David A. Bednar, “Bear Up Their Burdens With Ease”, General Conference, April 2014

5.
“At the heart of the English word atonement is the word one. If all mankind understood this, there would never be anyone with whom we would not be concerned, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, or social or economic standing. We would strive to emulate the Savior and would never be unkind, indifferent, disrespectful, or insensitive to others.”
Elder M. Russell Ballard, “The Atonement and the Value of One Soul,” General Conference, April 2004

6.
“Father in Heaven, the unfailing companionship of this Beloved Son, the consummate gift of the Holy Ghost angels in heaven, family members on both sides of the veil, prophets and apostles, teachers, leaders, friends. All of these and more have been given as companions for our mortal journey because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the Restoration of His gospel. Trumpeted from the summit of Calvary is the truth that we will never be left alone nor unaided, even if sometimes we may feel that we are. Truly the redeemer of us all said: “I will not leave you comfortless.”
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, “Non Were With Him, General Conference, April, 2009

7.
There is an imperative need for each of us to strengthen our understanding of the significance of the Atonement of Jesus Christ so that it will become an unshakable foundation upon which to build our lives. As the world becomes more devoid of foundational standards and as honor, virtue, and purity are increasingly cast aside in the pursuit of appetite, our understanding of and faith in the Atonement of Jesus Christ will provide strength and capacity needed for a successful life. It will also bring confidence in times of trial and peace in moments of turmoil.
Elder Richard G. Scott, “He Lives All Glory to His Name”, General Conference, April 2010

8.
That is the promise of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Atonement: to take anyone who comes, anyone who will join, and put them through an experience so that at the end of their life, they can go through the veil having repented of their sins and having been washed clean through the blood of Christ.
President Boyd K. Packer, “The Atonement”, General Conference, October 2012

9.
The healing power of the Lord Jesus Christ—whether it removes our burdens or strengthens us to endure and live with them like the Apostle Paul—is available for every affliction in mortality.
Elder Dallin H. Oaks, “He Heals the Heavy Laden”, General Conference, October 2006

10.
The Atonement also gives us the strength to endure “pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind,” because our Savior also took upon Him “the pains and the sicknesses of his people" (Alma 7:11). Brothers and sisters, if your faith and prayers and the power of the priesthood do not heal you from an affliction, the power of the Atonement will surely give you the strength to bear the burden.

Elder Dallin H. Oaks, “He Heals the Heavy Laden”, General Conference, October 2006
